“The Overview Effect, first described by author Frank White in 1987, is an experience that transforms astronauts’ perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it. Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.”
After watching, I was compelled to share this awe-instilling glimpse of the Overview Effect. It’s only 20 minutes. Savor it, then read on to hear my favorite parts.
My favorite drops of wisdom:
“We have to start acting as if we were one species with one destiny. We are not going to survive if we don’t do that.”
This idea is so simple, yet so ahead of our time. We will learn it though. We must.
“If the Earth becomes sick, then we become sick.”
Again the inter-connectedness of mankind with the Earth is so essential. We are just one living being. It is so obvious that it’s hard to remember.
“A beautiful oasis in the middle of nothingness. Seeing the earth with a back drop of infinity amongst the Milky Way, is just an awesome experience. It completely shifts one’s perspective.”
It is a delicate balance. We are so vulnerable. The atmosphere is just a thin layer blanketing us all. It is our only shield of protection from the harshness of space. Let us all do our best to sustain its blessing.
Earth is extremely precious and we must care for it, as it is our space ship, our vehicle, our body. Our lungs are the trees. Our skin is the soil. Our life is the sun. We must not forget this, even for a moment. A living realization of this inter-connectedness is what will truly move mankind forward.
If you enjoyed watching this video, and it resonated with you, then I am glad, because you are moving mankind forward.
Thank you.
